Ceramic Visual Analysis Tool

A guided, single-image ceramic analysis workspace for archaeological documentation. The tool now begins with image preparation and object-boundary confirmation, then moves into contour editing, rim planning, surface annotation, pXRF preparation, JSON archiving, and server-side PDF reporting.

How this version works

Upload a ceramic image, review the detected object boundary in a wireframe preview, approve or correct that boundary, then move into detailed analytical marking. The workflow is explicit so measurements and reports are grounded in a confirmed object boundary rather than an unchecked automatic guess.

Artifact Image Record

Upload one ceramic photograph and record the contextual information needed for a defensible visual analysis. Immediately after upload, the tool creates a wireframe review.

What to do here

  1. Upload a single ceramic image.
  2. Add object category and any site/catalog context.
  3. If a ruler is visible, check the scale box now. You will mark the exact scale later.

Step 2

Wireframe Review and Boundary Confirmation

This is now the required review stage. Confirm that the detected outline follows only the ceramic object, not the photo background or page frame.

What to do here

  1. Check the three preview panels below.
  2. Detected object should isolate the ceramic from the background.
  3. Wireframe outline should trace the ceramic body only.
  4. If the result is wrong, retry detection or switch to manual boundary mode.
  5. Approve the boundary before moving into detailed analysis.

For whole vessels, the tool attempts vessel-specific guides: rim ellipse, base ellipse or arc, left and right sidewalls, centerline, and default pXRF zones. Manual rim points remain available for analyst review.

Step 3

Detailed Analysis Workspace

After the boundary is approved, use this workspace for manual refinement, rim-point marking, scale calibration, surface annotation, color sampling, and pXRF target planning.

What to do here

  1. Use Review / Drag to inspect and drag existing points.
  2. Use Boundary points only to refine the outside edge of the ceramic.
  3. Use Rim points only where the lip or rim is clearly visible.
  4. Use Mark scale after entering a known distance.
  5. Surface, decoration, abrasion, residue, and pXRF tools add descriptive analytical marks.

Interpretation boundary: area and perimeter are projected from the photograph. Axis-aligned max length/width are retained for continuity; oriented major/minor axes are added for rotated subjects. Rim diameter includes an uncertainty band when rim points are available. No typological or cultural identification is performed.

How to use diagnostics

  1. Click Run Diagnostics after the page loads or after a failure.
